Whitehall school

I’m looking for the site of the first school at Whitehall – Taotaoroa No 2. Opened in 1885, as a half time school, it was last used in early 1931 as a full time school renamed Whitehall. Google Maps Satellite has the western portion of Whitehall at good resolution while the eastern side remains poorly rendered.

There have been two school sites in Whitehall, two names and three buildings (well four actually). The school on the original site called Taotaoroa No 2 became Whitehall in 1916 during a chequered life that saw it closing and reopening, at times, during it’s nearly 50 year history. When the school moved to the present site near the Brunskill Road, Whitehall and French Pass Roads intersection, in 1931, a ‘second hand’ school building from Monavale was employed and joined at some point by a prefab (the two building school I went to). In 1975/6 the current school building was built. It has been subsequently added to. The ‘Monovale’ building has found a permanent home at Ag Heritage on the Fieldays site at Mystery Creek.

Note: This is my first attempt at embedding a Google map and setting up personalised ‘points of interest’. It seems to be working fine though it may need a little tweaking. I can’t say it will work properly in IE but it seems fine in Firefox.
