Meade Clinical Centre – Waikato Hospital

Impressive building ~ light, airy and, from my brief experience of it, comfortable.  A generous and effective working space ~ part airport lounge, part rabbit warren, part mall; bet it cost a bomb. Dad (the patient) was impressed with the view due south to Kakepuku (from Level 2).

Not impressive is navigating the place. It is not so much maze as a multi-choice opportunity in getting lost. Visitor comfort is cool – there’s this flash call up system (once you have checked in) on multiple screens ~ (call up to the right ~ TV on the left).  But; so where do we go now?

Surely some knowledgeable bright spark could come up with an engaging and comprehensive way of ‘managing the visitor experience‘ just a teensy weensy bit. OK so, blue signs for the workers (fancy location codes, levels & doctor stuff) coupled with something agreeably informative and engaging so I can quickly grasp where the nearest toilet is.

HeadShoulders, Knees and Toes or da vinci man (suitably upgraded; culturally sensitive gender inclusive LGBT friendly ‘n all) a possibility. Perhaps even some creative variation on The Tube map – anything better than nothing.

Seems you go to a building such as this to get stuff done. The folk who do the stuff pretty much know their way around. The building’s visitors are most probably not medically trained – so colloquial signage will more than likely do it.

That there appeared to be a person at my elbow ready to assist each time I voiced a where do we go now question speaks volumes for the fundamental failure in the design of the space.

Anyway, thanks to the folk who did patiently guide us to where we needed to go. Promise, I won’t even ask where the building’s Facebook page is.

2012 Festival Magic | Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival | Lake

2012 Festival Magic | Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival

I walked into an oddly quiet Hamilton Gardens at 6:30 this evening. There was something just a little austere about the whole place; the parking (well that was fine – sharp and efficient), the docents or whatever with their walkie talkies – the un-festive stretches of ugly chain link fencing. I had expected the place to be humming (or buzzing?) and connected, I suppose – it was quite the opposite. A little scout around revealed; folk gathering for Shakespeare by the river (in an area unfamiliar to me), the sound of performance from the Italian garden, preparations for a lake side concert and random folk and families here and about. I came to video Chris and Stan play before the screening of Casablanca in the Rogers Rose Garden. I guess there were 2 – 300 folk there by the time I had completed my task. Pretty sure the performance by the lake is called Unfinished Business.

Richard O’Brien and Riff Raff 29 November 2011

Richard O'Brien and Riff Raff 29 November 2011

This is a pleasant surprise. Richard O’Brien Rocky Horror Show creator at the Riff Raff statue, erected in his honour in Hamilton CBD, today, Tuesday the 29th of November 2011. Richard is attending a photo op to announce his New Zealand citizenship (to be acknowledged formally in December)  and to publicise a one off 70th birthday celebration concert at Founders Theatre It’s Party Time with Richard O’Brien on the 17th of March 2012  in support of Starship Foundation. Cool.

Carparking availability sign Victoria Street Hamilton

From Leamington to Kaipaki, Mystery Creek (Mellow Road is closed – for resurfacing it would appear) to Rukuhia and across the Waikato River at Narrows Bridge into Tamahere and a coffee at Punnett Cafe, on Newell Road, right in the middle of the strawberry harvest. Into the southern end of Victoria Street Hamilton (after the morning rush) and a free 120 minute parking space! Trees at the Meteor (you may like to change the URL of your landing page) is not on until the 13th of December – (note to self: do your research).

The old pool appears operational though closed for swimming this Tuesday morning – love the blue. The Hamilton Club on Grantham Street is a busy archaeological dig with the old building sitting at the southern end of the site awaiting repositioning (I think this is called The Grantham Project). Garden Place and the Christmas Tree under construction – Garden Place even after a recent serious makeover looks bereft – a little lacking. As I have been saying, over the past couple of years, Hamilton CBD is a strange land to me – a place I visited daily until late 2003 – it is far prettier than it used to be but seems far sparcer of people.

North along Victoria and London where I say hi to Murray and Tony at London Street Cafe (I think). Mainly Chairs in Barton Street where I overhear a snippet of most glorious Walter Mitty proportions (from a customer).

Back through Centreplace to Artifice in Collingwood Street – cute – a bit retro twee but cool decorative art all the same – multi media as well.

Then an in the right place and at the right time moment I am introduced to Richard O’Brien by Mark Servian at Riff Raff Statue.

Casabella Lane, Hamilton, New Zealand.

Photos and videos taken today, Wednesday the 5th of October 2011, during a short trip to Hamilton: Steele Park, Grey Street, Bridge Street (Waikato River), Museum (Victoria Street), Garden Place, Ward Street, Centre Place, Barton Street, Casabella Lane. Not quite a decade ago (2003) and in the decade prior (1993-2003) this is a journey I made most week days (in whole or in part) – the Steele Park, Grey Street, Bridge Street walk less often; parking on the western (city) side of the Waikato River in Grantham Street. Overriding impression; eerily quiet streets and empty eateries (OK mid morning mid week!) – though moving in an easterly direction from Garden Place things become a tad more city like.
