Some fun in naming our names BUT there is at least one missing .. can you figure out what name?

Thirty names associated with Cambridge New Zealand. Mountains, hills, lakes, swamps, farming ‘districts’, our river and streams: the assignment is neighbours (yes, I know and I did do the WP stuff as well). The graphic I prepared earlier. Love these places and place names. I live in Leamington, was born in Cambridge, and grew up at Whitehall. And Taotaoroa is right next door to Hobbiton. Just saying. Rough guesstimate as to the population of the area described; 25,000.

Today’s assignment: write and publish a “who I am and why I’m here” post on your blog.
A refresher for me – a pause to come to terms with the ‘new’ wp.COM editor – which I have pretty much avoided until now. I am a photographer. I have blogged for about 10 years and been here on the WordPress platform since 2008. A small gallery of photographs taken in the first 4 days of 2016.

Today I got to be a press photographer for a few of hours. Got to drive on the new expressway before it opened – on reflection I may have VIP’d when I should have press’d (different car parks). Listened to speeches celebrating the land & it’s people, the maunga standing around us, the engineering and construction and the work of individuals as is the way of these things. Minimal politics. At 3PM I joined the community day throng with Dad and bused over the Karapiro Gully viaduct to the southern interchange and returned to Hautapu for an amble around the pop up village there to feed, water, entertain, amuse & inform. Lots of people. And then a third visit for a bike ride to the Karapiro gully / stream viaduct and back to Victoria Road with the assistance of these folk. There are photos.

An apt image, I think, for Cambridge New Zealand, this week, with the opening of our flash new ‘bypass’ a.k.a. more formally the Waikato Expressway Cambridge section.

For travelers a spot along State Highway 1 that has been enjoyed, and recalled, for yonks – perhaps as long as there has been a SH1 and a large wooden church on this corner. When diverted through San Fransisco, years ago, I was off the plane first not wanting to miss my connecting flight to LA. Showing my passport I got ‘my wife and I travel to New Zealand regularly we love the white church on the corner in Cambridge‘. Cool. Perhaps it is the only image that springs to mind when others think of our place; Cambridge, the largest of the Waikato towns bar the city of Hamilton. And this the very same verge where family and friends gathered before celebrating my parents’ wedding in St Andrews Anglican Church 66 years ago. State Highway 1 no longer, from Tuesday, with the opening of the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway 2.4km to the north.

The ‘watermark’ you now see on all my photographs has been a long time coming. 2015, a time of much photography but little publishing, has offered me a clearer understanding of what I’m actually doing by publishing my work. Photography, for me, is both craft and art (as well as income). I guess this seems pretty obvious. The craft; the discipline, has been hard won over time and produces some really cool stuff – even though I say so. The art, well, you can behold or not as is your choice. I enjoy being paid. Named for a photographer friend this watermark has a top, middle and a bottom version. One set for online generation, automatically, across my galleries and a Lightroom set generated on export for ‘loose’ proofs. Some special folk have played their part, knowingly or unknowingly, in both the design and thinking behind it. Thank you. Simply put my watermark addresses authorship & ownership, especially now within the cascade of images created daily, and is a clear statement of the value I place on my work.
