Hamilton New Zealand Wednesday 5 October 2011 1

Pavilion, Steele Park, Hamilton East, Waikato, New Zealand

Pavilion, Steele Park, Hamilton East (Grey Street), Waikato, New Zealand.

Photos and videos taken today, Wednesday the 5th of October 2011, during a short trip to Hamilton: Steele Park, Grey Street, Bridge Street (Waikato River), Museum (Victoria Street), Garden Place, Ward Street, Centre Place, Barton Street, Casabella Lane. Not quite a decade ago (2003) and in the decade prior (1993-2003) this is a journey I made most week days (in whole or in part) – the Steele Park, Grey Street, Bridge Street walk less often; parking on the western (city) side of the Waikato River in Grantham Street. Overriding impression; eerily quiet streets and empty eateries (OK mid morning mid week!) – though moving in an easterly direction from Garden Place things become a tad more city like.

Food from Northern Laos: The Boat Landing Cookbook

Robyn Eckhardt’s review of Dorothy Culloty‘s book Food from Northern Laos: The Boat Landing Cookbook.

If the cuisine of Laos is little known outside the country, then the cooking of Luang Namtha, its northernmost region, is all but invisible. That may change if the slim, richly illustrated “Food From Northern Laos: The Boat Landing Cookbook,” (Galangal Press, 2010) by New Zealanders Kees Sprengers and Dorothy Culloty gets the attention it deserves.

Future Proof Waikato?

Future Proof outlines how the Hamilton, Waikato and Waipa region will develop moving forward.

Well, I hope they know. At first I thought it a joke. More here. They must be serious – pity they didn’t spend more time writing proper.

What is the vision?

Update 20:55 9/09/2009: Seems I’m a little late on the uptake; this from Mairi Jay in April this year.

It’s just rubbish – artists

Process, practice, conceptual framework, hard work, being there/here, sharing, communication. Surely we’ve already had this little chat. The process bit appears naive, unworldly and embarrassingly behind the times – a discussion about a discussion about a discussion? Yeah right.

And this.

Asia Pacific Bowls Championships 2009

Leamington Bowls alumna Genevieve Baildon continues to shine on the world stage as a member of New Zealand Lawn Bowls (Bowls New Zealand) team aka The Black Jacks at the Asia Pacific Bowls Championships 2009 being played in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur 6th-16th August 2009). Genevieve, 2008/09 Women’s World Junior Champion and current member of Hillcrest Bowling Club (Hamilton), joined Leamington Women’s Bowling Club (now Leamington Bowls) as a youngster during the 1996/97 season. On the national scene since 1998/99 Genevieve began playing internationally during the 2002/2003 season and joined the Black Jacks in November last year. The current campaign sees Genevieve representing New Zealand in the Pairs as lead with Val Smith (skip). She is member, also, of the Fours – again as lead – with Manu Timoti, Dale Lang and Karen Coombe (skip).

Update 1000 12/0/2009: Not great news from BowlsNZ.

Wondering about Waipa?

Cambridge and Leamington combined form one of two major population centres within Waipa District, the other is Te Awamutu. Here are some stats from the localcouncils.govt.nz website. The Waipa District Council website. Waipa is one of the twelve district councils of the Waikato Regional Council or as it is more commonly known and branded Environment Waikato.

Above Waipa District Council HQ building on Bank Street Te Awamutu viewed from Teesdale Street just beyond the cenotaph on Anzac Green to the left. Yes, that is a kauri in the centre of the photograph.
