There’s much happening around the highest point in Leamington; the highest point in the whole of Cambridge! Lauriston Park Retirement Village rockets towards completion. Next door – well, down the hill just a bit – Cambridge Tavern – sad shadow of it’s former self is ending its 35 year tenure of the corner of Campbell and Burns streets in the next few weeks. The area bounded by Campbell, Shakespeare, Raleigh and Burns is referred to, I see, in one document floating about, as Leamington Shopping Centre – well I suppose you would call it that, I guess, even if not strictly true. There is other stuff going on in there; Raleigh Street Christian Centre & Cambridge Montessori Preschool (the southern centre that is). And a new smallish tavern, a supermarket and ? – a shopping centre will be nice if well done.

No new news yet on the fate of Victoria Bridge one of the two bridges across the Waikato River which link the two sides of Cambridge New Zealand; Cambridge and Leamington. 11:50AM 5/9/2011. This photograph was taken on Wednesday the 31/8/2011

Magnolia Iolanthe. Frost damaged I am reliably informed! I’m experimenting with selective focus – not something I am overly used to. The design / arrangement of the out of focus branches and blooms are of interest to me here.
Lurking about the corner of Noel and Shakespeare for the past three or four days. It has just the one character on its address panel ‘2’. A bit of the travelling gnomes. If you know whose it is text or email me so it can be returned.

Now here’s a question
Why would there be two reasonably large Christmas trees sitting on the greenbelt beside the old Leamington Factory on the corner of Carlyle Street, Rotoorangi Road and Lamb Street in June?

Cambridge and Leamington (by association) and the fact it forms half of our town, has had the marketing byline Town of Trees for some time. It works. Yes, there is the addition but lets just stick with this for the moment. Most of the trees lining the streets, on both sides of the river, are exotics and deciduous so at this time of the year we have leaves – lots of leaves. This can be charming for five minutes. Today in blustery weather there are leaves blowing every which way and things have become rather messy and cluttered and, not to put too fine a point on it, rather dirty and dejected looking. Then you get this – the impression of a fallen leaf stained into the footpath here on Shakespeare Street, just south of the shops. It has the look of a prehistoric rock painting.

Running parallel to Cambridge Road (which takes you to Te Awamutu and beyond to the south west – Taranaki and all that this entails) – this hedge comprises thirty-six Feijoa trees all producing fruit.
A sunny, Saturday, autumn afternoon in Leamington – and kites. The wind is a little patchy – but there is plenty to watch. From the big and bold to the subtle – the almost not there, the slick to the aerodynamically challenged. The 2011 Kite Days have been the initiative of the Waipa District Council folk – the ones in the blue tshirts. I particularly like this idea and the other almost lighter than air string affair featured in the day gallery.

I was looking for something else altogether. A visual aggregation from Bing of this website. Oddly out of date.

KFC Krushers full of real bitz!
A hedgehog story. An odd tap, tap, tapping. A rapid tap, tap, tapping. Sufficiently strange to draw me outside at four in the morning. Make sense of it? Armed cats? Early morning panel beating? No, the sound is coming from deep shadow not far off along the road. Movement? Crickets and katydids, the distant swish of cars on SH1. Closer, I see a hedgehog marching purposefully backwards and forwards its face stuck tragic-comically in a transparent KFC Krushers cup. The tapping as he bangs the cup on the asphalt. I try to remove the container but he sees me coming. I am successful the second time. More an observation than ‘story’ otherwise it will never see the light of day!
The Cambridge to Lake Karapiro portion of Te Awa – the Great New Zealand River Ride (Ngaruawahia to Horahora). Although yet to appear in the Waikato portion of Te Araroa the national cycleway-walkway. The westerly end begins at the intersection of Carlyle Street where Browning Street becomes Maungatautari Road in Leamington. Some 6km in length, give or take, and running alongside Maungatautari Road (and the Waikato River – a paddock or so to the north) through Pukekura to Judd Lane at Lake Karapiro. The eastern portion at the Karapiro Hydro dam end is interesting – a cantilevered boardwalk arrangement below the place called Crows Nest (Redoubt) or Te Tiki o te Ihingarangi just as you drop down to the dam.

Reflecting on where I’ve been
Over the past sixty days I’ve been developing the Cambridge New Zealand website among other things. One of the selfish intentions of the project is to pull my own blog/website away from an at times relentless focus on my town (it’s been my town all my life) and spread my attention back to the varied and the random which have always been at the core of my image making. Not that I won’t continue to photograph here – it’s where I am.
So, beginning now and breaking with almost five years of tradition – here, I’m going to publish a series of images which have been neglected, overlooked or ignored. To kick off – I had to have a little chuckle this morning when confronted with this view from my driveway. A message of some significance given the discussions about social media and online marketing I’ve been having over the past few days.

It’s just a pity some folk find it necessary to disrupt the lives and peace of mind of their neighbours. OK, so in posting this I run the risk that someone will get a thrill because their handiwork has been noted and is on the Internet. Equally, I would hope a quiet word from one in the know along the lines that one’s free time might be more valuably spent could be a good outcome. It’s the small things.
Still some way to go. A rationalisation to the look of the sidebar as well. Site map count: 1,569. Oh, and faster loading through reduction of front page by about 40%.
It is possibly quicker and easier to use this. The Draft Waipa District Plan is available for public feedback until 30th November 2010.

There are 1600 plus vehicles in the WRCH2010 Park & Ride Blue P1 Lamb Street car park at the Cambridge Polo grounds, on the Cambridge greenbelt, here in Leamington New Zealand at 2:45pm this afternoon the 5th of November 2010. We are looking directly towards Lake Karapiro from here – at a distance of approximately 6km as the crow flies. Beyond the cars – the buses lined up on Roto-o-rangi Road to carry folk to and return them from the venue.
