Karapiro hydo dam

Lake Karapiro, moments before the first race of the 2009 New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Championships this morning Monday the 30th of March 2009, from the roadway on top of Karapiro dam looking south toward the finish of the 2000 metre rowing course (obscured by the small Toi tio covered headland and Karapiro Ski Club). The small dots, beyond the weed boom, are rowing crews heading out from the boat park pontoons to race. From this POV crews travel down (south) the left hand (eastern) side of the lake and race back close to the western shore to the finish line, just beyond the headland, in roughly a NNE direction. The eastern slopes of Maungatautari rise beyond the course to the right.

Maadi Cup Tweets

Favourite :)

Stroke: sits at the front and looks pretty Bow: has an amazing talent for finding floating trees, banks, other boats, etc

I did a search interested to see what the take up of Twitter is among this cohort of people; um – not great. Maadi the place in Egypt is mentioned numerous times – most probably by an age group a decade or half a decade older. Then I am only using the one word search; ‘Maadi’. Could also be that phone to phone texting is so ubiquitous here that Twittering is of little interest. That and it’s public nature and ease of use or not.

Now I have found: Twitter Alerts. Well a Twitter alert service called TweetBeeps.

2009 North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships

Wanganui Collegiate School students celebrate their school – and their sport – at Lake Karapiro Domain Waikato, today Sunday, the 15th of March 2009. The secondary schools of Te Ika a Maui come yearly to this colourful regatta hosted by Karapiro Rowing Inc. on Lake Karapiro.  NISS is the penultimate annual regatta (the South Island equivalent is also being held this weekend) on the secondary school rowing calendar – the final – the Maadi Cup will be held this year at Lake Karapiro from the 30th of March till the 5th of April 2009.

Clifton Rowing Club 2008

Clifton Rowing Club 2008 from Michael Jeans on Vimeo. (I see the title says March 2009 – my mistake – that should be March 2008).

This has been around for a while. It was made some time last year. I used it just now to check out my new Vimeo subscription. There is no sound. It does I trust give a little taste of rowing at Karapiro – well watching rather than doing. At just over 11 minutes it is just a mite repetitive but it does the trick. The two schools involved; Sacred Heart Girls’ College New Plymouth and New Plymouth Boys’ High School.

These photographs were taken on Sunday the 16th of March 2008 at NISS rowing champs at Lake Karapiro.

Wassup! Te Reo

I wrote this five or six weeks ago (last edited 25 June) and have been waiting for a suitable image to accompany it. I had wanted to photograph the badges but everyone I spoke to around here has returned theirs to Wellington.

Why is such a beautiful name, Manurewa, mispronounced by so many on radio and teevee. OK, I am far from perfect but I do try to get it right most of the time. Pronunciation that is. My pc or university pronunciation, of te reo, is remarkably different from the Anglicised versions with which I grew up and painfully different still, at times, from the joyful music of ‘native tongue’ speaking friends (who I must add speak perfect New Zealand English).
